The Roofing Industry Committee on Weather Issues, Inc. invites you to join us Thursday, September 6, 2007 at the New Orleans
Marriott Hotel in New Orleans, LA for our fall seminar.
HURRICANE KATRINA FINAL REPORT
The Hurricane Katrina Report is in the final publishing stage. Attendees will receive a CD copy of the report. (Note: If you
attended the last workshop, you will automatically receive a copy). This seminar will include detailed presentations on both
the low and steep slope investigations from the report and will also provide insight on how to use the data in the report.
BUILDING CODE UPDATE
A panel of building code experts will provide an overview of the building and residential codes that were in effect when Katrina
made landfall, the subsequent changes that have been made and an update on how the state-wide code is progressing. Current
activities of the Louisiana Uniform Construction Code Council will include an overview of the revised statutes concerning
inspectors and qualifications (Act 12). Chief Building Officials from the cities of New Orleans and Slidell will be on hand
to share their observations and information on local jurisdictional issues. The program includes adequate time for questions.
APPLICATION AND PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALT SHINGLES
Based on research findings, ARMA has published two new papers: New Wind Standards for Asphalt Shingles and Nail Application
of Asphalt Strip Shingles for New and Recover Roofing. The presentation will include an overview of the standards and an
explanation of their applicability and use. In addition, an update on current ARMA technical bulletins and other resources
available to the industry will be provided.
ROOF EDGE PERFORMANCE DURING HURRICANE FORCE WINDS
Perimeter edge metal for low slope roofing has long been recognized as one of the most vulnerable areas of the roof during wind
events. ANSI/SPRI ES-1 was developed to provide a means for calculating the wind load forces on low slope roof edge, and a method
for testing the edge metal's resistance to those loads. ANSI/SPRI ES-1 is now included in both the 2003 and 2006 versions of the
International Building Code. This presentation will cover the performance of metal roof edges during high wind events, addressing
the most common failures and examining the effectiveness of the ES-1 Standard. Recommendations will be made for how to improve
perimeter edge metal performance; as well as how to specify, fabricate and install perimeter edge metal that meets the ANSI/SPRI
ES-1 requirements.
WEATHER RELATED MITIGATION & CODE UPDATE
This presentation will review the latest mitigation efforts for weather related issues. It will include retrofit guides and
programs like My Safe Home Program in Florida, efforts in the code arena, and updates on code adoption in various states.
BATTLING HAIL WITH IMPACT RESISTANT ROOFING
The purpose of this presentation is to educate attendees on the topic of Impact Resistant Roofing (IRR) products. The presentation
will cover the history of why IRR standards were created, as well as the basic details of each testing standard
(UL-2218 & FM-4473). Based upon field data from actual storm damage, we will be able to help attendees have a better
understanding on how to improve roof performance in hail prone regions.
RICOWI WIND INVESTIGATION PROGRAM UPDATE
RICOWI and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory / Department of Energy have renewed their Cooperative Research and Development
Agreement for the 2007 hurricane season. RICOWI's wind investigation teams are ready for deployment should a Category 3, or
greater, hurricane make landfall in a populated area of the continental US. A brief status report will be given along with
information on how other individuals might participate in our program.
